Motohiro Tomii: Sculptures, an exhibition featuring the work of sculptor Motohiro Tomii, is currently open at Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts. Tomii seeks to liberate everyday items from their original purpose and create sculptures that distills their color, form, and atmosphere. The simple act of utilizing everyday household goods, stationery, and office supplies out of their usual, expected ways by stacking up, lining up, or arranging them allows Tomii to transform them into pieces of art. Tomii’s process is a circular one, as he returns his works back into the world of utility, and through this perhaps he is hinting that anyone can become a sculptor. With around nine series, 45 items, and 2800 “sculptures”, with a focus on his newer works, this exhibition seeks to stir up and unleash the creativity resting in each of our hearts.
