Fabric dyed in deep blue, covered in simple, white undyed kisho patterns of flowers and butterflies. An exhibition featuring Chinese Indigo resist-dyed fabric called Raninkafu—otherwise known as Blue Calico, it is a beloved tradition chiefly from the South of China which we featured in vol. 4 of Subsequence—is currently open in Meguro Museum of Art.
The exhibition is hosted by Raninkafu Watanabe, who continue the work of the late Masa Kubo, the individual who introduced this indigo fabric and its techniques to a Japanese audience from the 1970s. This is a wonderful opportunity to see a variety of valuable pieces, including older works, creations by young and upcoming artists, as well as fabric prints created using “kyokechi”, a traditional Chinese resist-dyeing technique.
