Nobuyoshi Kinjo “Dialogue with Okinawa and its Original Spaces: Part 2”

Subsequence

2024.12.25

A collection of photographs by architect Nobuyoshi Kinjo and photographer Genko Mizushima has been brought together. From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, the pair travelled around Okinawa main island and other surrounding islands and took over three thousand photographs, a selection of which are collected in this new volume. It is a great shame that Naha Civic Hall, often regarded as Kinjo’s representative work, has been demolished as of November this year, but this photobook is a wonderful opportunity to see the world through the eyes of the architect who strove to create Okinawa’s original spaces.

Nobuyoshi Kinjo (1934 – 1984). An architect who was active during the late Showa era. After working in the Architectural Department  of the Government of the Ryukyu Islands, he founded his own architectural firm. Some of his designs include the Naha Civic Hall and the Okinawa Pavilion for Expo ’75 . His legacy includes bringing traditional Okinawan architectural styles to the modern day.
