Minato-machi Shugeibu(Minato Handicrafts Club) is a space based in Minato-ku, Nagoya, started by artist Asuka Miyata where people of various ages come together to learn knitting and other handicrafts. A book containing pictures of the crafts made by the students of the club in their 60s and 70s, as well as articles and essays, has just been published. The pieces within are the manifestation of the joy of creating something with your hands. They represent the valuable time spent at home or the relationships with family or loved ones—pieces of art that wouldn’t have been created if they were originally made with the purpose of being sold. Indeed, they show the creative possibilities of what human hands can make as well as the simple wonder that is creation.
