A concert by musician and sound artist Kazuya Matsumoto is being held at Soto in Kyoto. This performance will seek to challenge the possible range of expression of music through using non-instruments such as found objects, sculpted objects, natural objects, bodies, and devices. Aleatoric environmental sounds become part of the performance as Matsumoto unveils a new approach to listen to the everyday.

Kazuya Matsumoto (Musician, Sound Artist, Drummer)
With a background in percussion, Matsumoto uses his experience through playing and listening to environmental sounds, using non instrumental objects such as found objects, nature, body and devices for various sound expressions. He aims to break the boundaries between his output and the surrounding environmental sounds to explore deep listening improvisation expressions. Previously he has released 3 albums “Mizu No Katachi (2015)”, “OchiruChiruMichiru (2017)” and “Mujo (2022)” from the renowned SPEKK label. Other releases include “Open Grindhouse (2018)” produced within the Bass Trio residency program, “Amorphous (2021)” a trio soundtrack with TAMARU and Takashi Tsuda, and “Micro Ambient Music (2024)” a memorial project album for Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Aside from creating improvisational music with aleatoric natural sounds, he also composes music for films, visual works, plays and commercial facilities. He also tours throughout Japan for performances including the “Listen to the sound of people” tour where he aimed to just meet people without doing any performances during the COVID-19 pandemic, space exhibitions and sound installations, and site-specific exhibitions (residing and using the sound of that space). He is also the executive committee member of the Ashi No Geijutsu Genya Festival held in Shiretoko Peninsula from 2021, always pursuing expressions based on sounds.
