An exhibition by Brussels-based artist Michiko Van de Velde is currently underway at Ichibanboshi Gallery in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Van de Velde began painting with oils at age 7. After developing a particular interest in the movement of sunlight and the passage of time, she explored various artistic methods including oil painting, prints, and site-specific installations. This exhibition features a new work “Safflower Fields” which depicts a landscape of safflowers in Kahoku-cho, Yamaga Prefecture. This landscape, created using her memories and sketches, depicts a scene that can be interpreted in many ways, drawing out the personal experiences of each viewer, while also touching on a universal perspective.
