An exhibition featuring the work of Sol LeWitt (1928–2007), an American artist active in the latter half of the 20th century who was a pioneer of conceptual art, is currently open at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. A proponent of the belief that it is ideas and structures that are important in the creation of art, he developed a production process which allowed ideas to essentially live forever through instructions, writings, and diagrams. By using cubes as a modular structure, he used serial progression to create wall drawings, structures, and works on paper. The exhibition features new works created based on LeWitt’s instructions, as well as musings and letters written during his time in the publishing activities in New York and also while he participated in international exhibitions, which show a glimpse into LeWitt’s unbending stance as an artist. This exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to not only consider the question of what makes for good ideas in conceptual art, but also to observe the source of the thoughts of someone who didn’t lose their vividness in the face of a changing time and society, but instead embraced those changes.
