Gyroscope

text: Kosuke Ide (Editor in Chief)

2021.05.31

This is the gyroscope that was introduced in the “Featured Toy” series published in “Subsequence” vol. 1. Its unique movements are difficult to convey through the magazine, so I’d definitely recommend watching this video.

The “gyroscope” became a popular item after the Chandler Company began selling it in 1917. The gyroscope featured in this video is a product from the same company, and it probably from the 1920s or 1930s. Even after 100 years, it still spins properly!

The outer box features various illustrations depicting an airship, airplane and ship because the same measuring instrument that uses the principle of the gyroscope is used for the attitude control of these vehicles.

The principle of this “scientific toy” is a bit difficult to explain, but just looking at it makes me excited.
