“Red Pine”, the new book by Kyohei Sakaguchi, an artist who provides an illustration for the Editor’s Note of each issue of Subsequence, is currently available to purchase. The book is based on a short story by Sakaguchi that was serialised in the Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimbun, a local paper in Kumamoto where he lives.

The book is set in the woods and by the sea and depicts a fantastical adventure about a boy. Everything is drawn in freehand watercolor paint—including the art, the panel outlines, and even the text—which helps to create a unique and spiritual feel. It was Junpei Niki, art director for Subsequence, who provided the picture book-like full-color cover illustration. Just like a favorite book you had during your childhood, this book is one you’ll want to pick up and open again and again.
