I picked up a white book, about the size of my palm, in a bookstore one day. It looked to me like an instruction manual from a complete stranger. As I flicked through this passport-sized exercise book, inside there were various facts and rules regarding families and weddings. The book was filled with rules that spanned various countries and cultures—it seemed almost like a rulebook to the game of life.
Written by Joyce Lam, a Hong Kong based artist, At the end of a vertical line: an exercise book is an extension of her lecture performance On Family. The inspiration came from extended time spent at home during the stay home period, where all sorts of concerns and doubts cropped into mind and she decided to confront these in a physical format. This book tackles the fundamental question of “What is family?”
