“Miyawaki Ayako Retrospective: I saw, I cut, I applied” is currently on exhibit at the Tokyo Station Gallery. Ayako Miyawaki combined old fabric with appliqué and collage techniques to create works that were centered around the daily life of a housewife, often featuring images such as vegetables and fish. She closely analyzed the subjects of her art, with each piece of her large body of work having a remarkable balance of color and attention to form.
For our feature “Returning to an Unforgettable Home” in volume 2 of Subsequence, we went to Aichi Prefecture to visit the family home of Makoto Miyawaki, an antiques dealer and the grandson of Ayako Miyawaki. With the Western-style artist Haru Miyawaki as his grandfather and architect Mayumi Miyawaki as his uncle, it is undeniable that creativity filled the Miyawaki household. One of Mayumi’s favorite expressions was “Train your eyes and learn with your hands.” Makoto tells us that he believes that this approach is a Miyawaki family tradition.
