Akiko Wakana, a writer who contributed an essay to issue #7 of Subsequence, is the author of the long-seller “Tokyo Mini Hike”, first published in 2008 (Shoubunsha) and reissued with edits in 2015. This year, an all-new edition of this veritable modern classic has just been published.
In addition to the inclusion of ten new hiking routes and up-to-date information, the whole book has been edited and its maps have been updated. Not only that, but there are also new essays that explore the joys of hiking, including the people and creatures Wakana met, the tweeting birds, the changing flowers and fauna of the seasons, and breathtaking landscapes from mountain ridges.
This book has continued to be loved since its first publication seventeen years ago and will appear in another new form this year. That speaks well enough of the book’s universal quality and its position as a modern classic.
