To coincide with the publication of Subsequence Magazine vol.6, VISVIM GENERAL STORE / VISVIM GALLERY in the Naka Meguro area of Tokyo will host a special event Subsequence Salon.

Subsequence Salon is a pop-up gallery that exhibits and sells arts and crafts from all over the world for a limited time. Each work is carefully curated and selected by Subsequence Magazine. This time, we asked for the expertise of Tadashi Morita, owner of Komingei Morita featured prominently in this issue to help select a variety of garments worn by the Japanese commoner in the past, which includes workwear, hantens (short coats), and kimonos that will all be on display.

In March 2023, the antique store Komingei Morita, which had been in business for 53 years in the Minami-Aoyama neighborhood of Tokyo closed its doors leaving many of its patrons yearning for its presence. It represented a different perspective from the offerings of most antique stores that carried conventional tea ware and artworks that appreciate in value and instead provided folk-art pieces that were made between the Edo and Showa periods. Each of them was carefully selected by the discerning eye of owner Tadashi Morita. The store had countless fans that frequented the establishment, including Hiroki Nakamura, visvim’s Creative Director.

The store has now made plans to relocate and open once again in late October in the Kyodo area of Setagaya. The pieces that will inhabit his new space give off a sense of Mr. Morita’s eye as he continues to convey the charm found in older things even now after passing the age of 90 years old.

In addition to copies of the latest issue, some new official goods will also be available for sale at the venue. This will be a special limited time salon event where one will have the opportunity to discover some wonderful goods. We look forward to your visit.

Tadashi Morita
Born in 1933 in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture. After graduating from a local prefectural high school, Morita moved to Tokyo to pursue a post-secondary education, a course he was forced to abandon due to health complications. In 1970, he opened Komingei Morita in Minami-Aoyama, which closed in March 2023. He is beloved by his wide range of loyal customers, which includes antique collectors, designers, and artists. In October 2023, his shop will relocate and operate out of his home in the Kyodo section of Setagaya. He has also authored the books Wooden Folk-Art Antiques (Kogei Shuppan) as well as A Memory in Fabric and Flea Market Days (both from Seigensha).
