The Shoto Museum of Art is holding an exhibition featuring the handicrafts of Central Asia. Located along the Silk Road, a diverse culture blossomed in Central Asia due to the mixing and movement of various peoples since ancient times. It is said that the embroidered patterns and silver accessories made by the chiefly nomadic Turkmen people aren’t simply decorative but are symbols of the knowledge and prayers to keep them safe in their travels across the desert. The various nations of Central Asia (modern day Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan) were once within the Soviet Union and so for a long time, little information about the region reached Japan. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the traditional cultures and lifestyles of the people of this region.
