Water Calling Odawara

Subsequence

2026.07.29

Water Calling, a project about underground water that was exhibited last year in Kyoto, is currently being held at Sankirai, a community store near Odawara Station. Water Calling depicts underground water, something that is impossible for us to see, and explores how people have lived alongside water in Kyoto’s unique geographical feature known as the “Kyoto Water Basin”. Of course, Kyoto isn’t the only place where underground water exists. Due to its nature as a universally important topic, the exhibition is being held in curator Yoshiko Nagai’s hometown of Odawara.

Sankirai is a general goods store located on Ohoribata street near Odawara Castle where locals and tourists have come together for many years. While the exhibition focuses on Kyoto’s underground water, hopefully it will provide an opportunity to think about Odawara too. From the irrigation channels near Odawara Castle to the plentiful underground water of Ashigara Plains, Odawara too is a place filled with water-related history.
