An exhibition of work by Osamu Mori, a sculptor who created a near four-meter-tall wooden sculpture of Elvis Presley in 2020, is currently underway at PARCEL in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. In a digital age where our sense of scale is constantly being overwritten, Mori considers and utilizes the physical qualities of wood to create a range of sculptures that vary in size, from tiny palm-sized objects to massive works that approach five meters in height. At this exhibition, Mori questions how a sculpture can exist beyond the limitations of a white cube gallery space as he brings together a range of ideas and concepts—such as the decision to not combine parts or to affix them to walls—in order to create a huge human-shaped sculpture whose size is on par with the Nio guardian statues at the southern gate of Todaiji Temple. From the chisel marks on the wood of these overwhelmingly huge sculptures, you can clearly see the meeting point of the material and human techniques.

Osamu Mori (b. 1983, Aichi Prefecture), sculptor based in Tokyo. Completed his BFA in Sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2007, and a MFA in Sculpture from the same institution in 2009. Major exhibitions include the Yokohama Triennale (2011), Ba de ya (2022, PARCEL), TWISTER (2023, PARCEL). His works have been acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia.
