Yuri Shibuya, a long-term friend and a photographer whom I admire greatly, has just published two photo zines.
The first, Ten Years After, is a portrait collection of climbers in Yosemite National Park—a place that is regarded as a utopia by those who love climbing. Shibuya herself frequently goes there to climb and the title refers to this ten-year period from 2012 to 2023. For the purposes of this project, she stayed in Yosemite and got to know the climbers who cannot help but to scale the rocks there. The love and respect for them is palpable in the portraits captured within.
The second, For A Moment, is a series that instead focuses on the rockfaces, captured right at the moment when Shibuya is enraptured upon arriving for a climb. When I interviewed Shibuya over a decade ago, she told me, “I’m drawn to those emotions that you can only truly feel after spending a lot of time—not just days or weeks, longer than that—alongside something.” These singular moments found among a period of a decade holds a real weight in spite of the zine’s small size.
