Sixty Years of Design Survey: Where the Vernacular Became Architecture

Subsequence

2026.09.09

In the 1960s and ’70s, a vast number of architects conducted surveys on the streetscapes of Japan and released their findings in what is known as the Design Survey, which included diagrams and blueprints, in an architectural magazine. A number of important findings from this huge, country-wide survey are on display at the Yoshiro and Yoshio Taniguchi Museum of Architecture, Kanazawa. From detailed diagrams on huge three-meter-wide pieces of paper to vibrant photos of the time, the passion that these architects had in their search for the vernacular (that which is unique to a particular place) is palpable.
