2021.11.15

The National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto is hosting a retrospective exhibition of Felice “Lizzi” Rix-Ueno (1893-1967), a designer who worked in Vienna and Kyoto. After working as a member of the Wiener Werkstätte in the early 20th century, Lizzi married Japanese architect Isaburo Ueno and moved to Kyoto, where she created colorful and playful wallpapers and textiles.

These works were then used in architectural spaces to revitalize industrial design in post-war Japan. The exhibition features a wide range of works and documents, from narrative sketches to design drawings so vivid they could be mistaken for paintings. The display is scheduled to travel to the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum in Tokyo from February 2022.

The photograph is taken from the catalog of the exhibition “Isaburo Ueno + Lizzie Collection” organized in 2009 at the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto.
