An exhibition featuring the work of Bhajju Shyam, an Indian artist famous for his illustrations in The Night Life of Treesand Creation (published by South Indian publisher Tara Books), is currently ongoing at To-ji Temple’s Jikido Hall in Kyoto.
Bhajju Shyam is from Patangarh, Madhya Pradesh Central India, a region which is also home to the Pardhan tribe. Bhajju Shyam’s uncle and teacher, Jangarh Singh Shyam, was inspired by the art they created, known as Gond art, and pioneered a new school called Jangarh Kalam; a style which represents Gond art as it is known today. Bhajju Shyam has carried on the techniques from this school and through his work of representing Gond mythologies and stories through his own unique artistic perspective, he creates a range of beautiful pieces of art that strikes the hearts of his contemporary audiences.
The colors of To-ji Jikido’s interior resonates harmoniously with the delicate artistic world of Gond art, for an exhibition that celebrates the life that resides in people, animals, and plants.
