An exhibition on the dye artist Motoju Miyosawa (1909-2002) is currently being held at the Japan Folk Crafts Museum in Osaka. Born in the city of Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, Miyosawa moved to Shizuoka for a while and got to know the dye artist Keisuke Serizawa. Impressed with his work, he set out to become a dye artist, focusing on dyeing works on Japanese paper, which is considered difficult because it contains water. After returning to his hometown of Matsumoto, he began researching Shinshu patterns and travelled energetically around the world. His works, which are graphically arranged with exotic patterns and alphabets that are difficult to identify with a particular country, express his unique worldview based on his experience with local crafts. The photo shows the magazine “Kogei” No. 115 (1946, Japan Mingei Kyokai), for which Miyosawa made the stencil dye on the cover.
