Tropical Matsumura, a writer and editor who has worked with Subsequence as well as a collector of vintage surf merch, has published MY NIPPON SURFING SOUNDS—a book which seeks to introduce a discography of records from Japan’s surf music scene that Matsumura has collected over many years.

During the late ‘70s to the early ‘80s, surf culture from West Coast USA had a real boom in Japan and it was an era where many young people were decorating their cats to their rice paddles with mass-produced surf merchandise. Matsumura has collected a variety of well-known, rare, and valuable records from this time crossing a variety of genres from West Coast rock, AOR, surf disco, fusion, city pop, and surf ballads which feature in the book. His book is a wonderful snapshot that allows readers to get a feel for this unique era.
