Free online screening of the movie "Directed Games" by Jonathas de Andrade

Subsequence

2021.10.08

Directed Games (Brazil / 2019 / 57 min), a video work by Brazilian artist Jonathas de Andrade, will be screened online for free for fifteen days.

The story of the film takes place in a village of about 900 people in an extremely arid region of northeast Brazil. In the village, there is a high percentage of deaf people, about one per family. These people live in an isolated area and use sign language specific to their village. The artist films them running around the village and sharing their stories as if they were playing together.

Inventing from scratch, relationships that go beyond the family, turning difficulties into opportunities. And also, the rhythm that always resonates in the body. It is a film that shows the fundamental strength of life, made possible by the complex history of Brazil.

Subsequence’s editor and curator, Yoshiko Nagai, has written a booklet, Materia Prima vol.2, which explains the context of the work. To celebrate the launch of the booklet, it is now available online.
